Why we need a new building
The current building is over 65 years old an has deteriorated significantly. It also is no longer fit for purpose; lacking wheel chair access, poor insulation, leaking roof, kitchen unsuitable for food preparation and other short comings.
In addition we are going to build a new boat shed which will protect and secure our investment in water craft. This will also make the rest of the site safer for the young people to use.
A community resource
For over 65 years our building has also been shared with the community. We have had the pleasure and privilege of providing a space for the local community and various groups to make use of. There has been less of this over the past few years as the condition of the building has deteriorated. We look forward to that changing with the new building.
Shared welcoming spaces within a community contribute to building stronger, cohesive and resilient communities.
From a community consultation undertaken a while back, we know that this new building will provide a valuable resource to support groups within the community. We look forward to welcoming you.
Where we are up to…
The essential surveys, lease and planning permission are all in place. A community consultation has given us valuable insight into what would benefit local groups and organisations. We have an architect and project management company on board.
What will be inside the building?
We have put a lot of thought into what will work for both the young members of the scout group, as well as community groups, organisations and occasional users of the the new build.
The building will be wheelchair accessible throughout. From the gentle ramp to the front entrance, through the wide front door into the generously sized corridor. As with any modern build, there will be a wheelchair accessible toilet.
There will be several rooms including a small group meeting room, a kitchen suitable for catering and a large main hall. In addition a small foyer will welcome visitors into the building and provide a space for informal socialising. The toilets will be gender neutral.

Environmental impact
This will be built to the highest insulation specification we can achieve within our budget. That should ensure that heating costs will be as low as possible. Large windows in the main hall will provide generous natural lighting.
While we will not be including solar panels in this stage of the development, the design has allowed for simple retro-fitting of panels.
Planning is still underway regarding heating. We will be taking advice on the most effective heating system with a mind to environmental impact. We will not be using gas based heating.
