2nd Beeston Makes History at the Royal Navy Swimming Gala!
We don’t go every year, but this year we attended the Royal Navy swimming gala at HMS Raleigh. The 2nd Beeston team did incredibly well and took the overall top prize for the first time: the Otter Trophy. A truly fantastic achievement and shows how far the Group has come over the past 9 years. Our medal-winning superstars were:
🥇🥈🥉 Briana – GOLD in U14’s Breaststroke, SILVER in Scout Squadron Relay & BRONZE in U14’s Freestyle
🥈 Michael – SILVER in Scout Squadron Relay
🥈🥈 Leo – SILVER in Scout Squadron Relay & U12’s Medley Race
🥇🥈🥈🥈 Caoimhe – GOLD in U12 Backstroke, SILVER in U12 Freestyle, U12 Medley Race & Scout Squadron Relay
A huge thank-you goes to Eamonn, Chris, and Samuel for the fundraising and supporting of this amazing trip. It is also wonderful to see all our of sections are full, with waiting lists and excellent leadership teams. Keeping up with the tech-savvy youngsters is no small feat — but luckily, they’ve got my back!
Island Open Day
Last year’s Island Open Day was a great success! It was a bit of a change from the past, with the emphasis on getting every section in the Group on the water at some point during the day. This was an enormous effort on a hot day for Jess and Ben, who led the activities. We intend to repeat the Island Open Day this year (date to be fixed). Over the past year, we’ve had a big influx of leaders with water activity qualifications, so we expect to get even more people on the water this year.
Keep an eye on our Facebook page and website for the latest info.
New Building
Thanks to the community’s continued support, we’re well on the way to building a fantastic new HQ. It’s fair to say that we’ve had several setbacks, but we’re committed to modernising our site for future generations of Young People coming through 2nd Beeston.
Whilst we have a remarkable set of people who are top drawer at getting grants, Covid-19 was a nightmare to work with — not least because it has led to the doubling of the overall cost to approximately £650,000. The current total raised is just shy of £200,000. Our updated target is to get the boat shelter up in Summer 2025, with the main building following by Spring 2026.

You can support our new building project by sponsoring a legacy tile. You can find more info about the tiles here.
Camps & Upcoming Events
The Scouts and Explorers went to Amsterdam last summer, which was a very exciting trip! I think this year will be in the UK, as they need time to save up for another international camp! The Cubs also had their annual camp, and I got roped into cooking, so I can confidently say they all had a great time.
We’d love to see you at some of our upcoming events. The Island Open Day will be taking place during the summer on Saturday 28th June, and the May Day Fair is taking place between 1pm and 5pm on Saturday, 3rd May at the Board & Horses in Beeston Rylands.
Best wishes,
