Explorer Scouts are members of an Explorer Scout Unit (ESU). In SW Notts there are five Explorer Units, one of which (Sharman) specialises in training Explorer Scouts as Young Leaders.
At our group we are directly linked with DISCOVERY ESU which specialises in water activities.
Explorers are encouraged to lead themselves. They invariably choose their own programme of activities and the direction of the Unit, with support and guidance from leaders. There is wider scope for activities like offshore sailing, campaigning, performing, parascending, mountaineering and expeditions.
The section also includes the Young Leaders’ Scheme, where young people are able to take on a leadership role in one of the younger sections.
Explorer Scouts are encouraged to register and participate in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme.
Explorer Scouts can be members of more than one Explorer Unit, enabling them to take on a diverse programme of activities.
During the winter months the Explorers usually meet on Friday nights at Lilac Grove HQ, 7:30-9pm. This can vary depending upon activities that they are doing.
